| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This is one of a series of photographs I took as part of my Photography 'O' Level course, back in 1982. The subject was Portraits.
At the time unemployment in the UK was high, as much as 3 million people were out of work, but college courses were free and everything was provided, although on a shoestring.
We were sent out with one roll of Ilford to take these photographs using the college's cameras, which were not fantastic! With no telephotos or zooms we had to ask the subject for their permission as this meant getting right in their faces to take the shot.
As I said in the intro to my 'Liverpool Lives' theme, I wanted to capture the real characters around Liverpool and I saw the older lady selling flowers. I approached her and asked her permission to take her picture, which she flatly refused. Instead she asked her assistant (possibly daughter) to pose, which as you can see, she did just that! I though, sneakily photographed the pair. Twenty-three years on, I find this image quite comical, especially the fashion aspect and the milk crates. |

Her perm is something different ! It looks like she is ready to go on a glossy magazine while Mom thinks she is safe from your lens.
