Obviously I couldn't use the whole photo - so began by cropping the clean area out of the middle. Clearly not good for the overall composition, but this is just for technique.
Created an identical duplicate layer of the whole photo.
Applied gaussian blur - just a little 0.8 - to the entire new layer.
Selected a very soft edged eraser tool with only about 30% opacity, and simply erased through the blurred layer to reveal the clean layer beneath.
As the original is probably a bit oversharpended, I dare say I didn't erase through 100% in any part.
Merged layers. Resized. Added border.

again, size is not a big issue here, we're not looking for "details" to be as large as possible, so I've reduced the overall size and added a BIG white frame. I think this accentuates the what this shot is. A MOOD shot. |

The original blurred bg makes this easier - just have to make sure there are no obvious repeating patterns.
Crop is there for no other reason than it makes the adjustments around the edges easier! |

(7379) [2008-07-12 02:17:07] [6] | I selected the robin, desaturated the rest of the background. Gave the robin 10% colour saturation and sharpened in unsharp mask.
Gave the whole image a 10% increase in contrast.
