| Intro: | My attitude towards photography has changed since I started putting some of my pictures on the web. I used to be mainly an observing photographer, (trying to) notify coincidental beautiful compositions in daily scenery. I was also convinced that there was only one correct way to display these pictures: realistically, the way the human eye sees them. A lot has changed. I began asking: how do we see things? And I discovered that there is often a huge gap between what the eye sees, and how the mind transforms this picture into something it wants to see. I also started taking pictures on film, developing and printing them in my home-made darkroom. This way I discovered that post-processing was not invented in the digital age. In fact, post-processing has always been an important aspect of photography. Somehow I've always known this, but I had to take a step back in order to fully realize it. Knowing that photography is (much) more than observing, notifying, composing, and pressing the shutter release button, did not make my pictures better. However, the good pictures used to be mainly coincidental lucky shots. Now I feel most of my better pictures are made in a controlled way, knowing what I want to display and how I want to do that. This does not mean there is no more room for fun and experiments. It is partly through trying random things, that we discover, learn, and master new techniques. This turns photography in a fun adventure where you never stop discovering and learning new things. (last update: May 2009) |
