I like the dark, high-contrast, but maybe her face was too dark. So here is a lighter version.

On the suggestion that it was too dark, I lightened up her face. Has more of glow here. Maybe more flattering. (Though perhaps less "rugged" this way, which is sort of the impression she gives me.)

I did the workshop as promised, cloning out the clothesline and adding a little blur to the background.
To be honest, I prefer your shot in every way. It just didn't work as well as I'd hoped ... except maybe getting rid of the clothesline.

In this version, I pushed the shadows and midlevels so the details in the upper part of the fire escape showed up better, but you can see that they caused a kind of halo around the sun.

I took the original off my website, where I'd posted it first. (Was too lazy to go look for the original.) Here I went back to the original and made a new version and uploaded it directly. There is a visible quality difference, isn't there? Don't you think? I must avoid making copies of copies. -Hugh

Layer and desaturate

Tried to enhance the spookiness of the original.
Added a layer of black, reduced opacity to 70% then erased over the face. Desaturated. Framed and resized.

I think the eyes stand out more powerfully and the smile seems to have gone from its face ...

Photoshop:
Copy the green channel to a new layer
Increase contrast with levels
Selected the highlights, copy to a new layer and set the blending mode to mutiply
Burn the edges with a soft black brush
Added frame
