First I adjusted the levels. Then I used a saturation adjustment layer to make it black and white.
I selected the background and instead of painting it black I used Gaussian Blur to make it less intrusive. I think that using a black or dark background makes the boy disappear into the back ground.
I didn't scale the photo up to 800 width because it would make it look like horrible because of the small size I had.
I'm not sure if it's better. I think the original is a difficult one to work with.
