To get rid of the distractions I first used the burn tool at 25% (in Photoshop)to darken the background. Then used the clone tool to get rid of the thing floating in the water and the edges of the pool. Then I increased the canvas size at the bottom of the image to give her feet more 'clearance'. Then cloned again to blend in the new canvas. Then finally used unsharp mask. Hope you don't mind.

The areas I felt could be improved

1. Colours very flat (probably due to weather conditions)

2. Too much dead space above the top of the mans head.

3. General and local colour saturation needed

4. Overall soft focusing

These were dealt with as follows.

1. Create a levels layer mask and select Red, then Green and blue separately from the drop down menu. For each colour selected move the slider at the bottom right of the graph inwards until it is underneath the start of the graph. Do the same for the bottom left slider if it is needed. This will boost the individual colour channels and help to bring out the true colours.

2. Create a saturation layers mask and do the following.
a) boost the overall colour saturation by sliding the saturation control for the master colour to the right.
b) select yellows from the drop down menu, then select the "+" eyedropper and click several different places on the sand to ensure you have covered most colour variation on the sand. Then move the saturation slider to the right to boost colour of the sand.

3. Flatten all layers then using the crop tool create a crop that removes the dead space at the top, crops closer to the back of his head but still leaves plenty of open space on the left for him to stare into.

4. Using either unsharp mask or smart sharpen set the sliders to a level that brings out the detail

5. Add a frame.
