Intro: Ciao! Olá! Salut! γειά! Hallo! здра! Muoyo! Jambo! Hola! Mbote! (hi!)

Thanks for visiting!

After an accident years ago that involved a coma, my life is often a struggle of memory against forgetting. Photography is, for me, an ally in that effort. The photos themselves and the stories and feelings around each are my way of remembering my own past.

Growing up in the city and on a ranch in central New Mexico, I took my first picture (with which I started this portfolio) in October of 1974, using my Dad's instamatic, and I was hooked!

Shortly thereafter I got my first camera, the then recently introduced Olympus OM-1.

I moved to Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo (then called Zaire), and was a science teacher in the deep interior (Bulongo, Kasai Occidental). There is a story to these Bulongo photos that I have detailed in the first one posted under the title fotos for food. After Bulongo, I moved to a city on the shores of Lake Kivu called Bukavu, one of the most beautiful places in Africa.

After 10 years in Boston, and now 15 in Seattle, I enjoy travel (lately enjoying Italy *a lot*!), and am still using my original Olympus OM-1, still running strong 35 years later!

I also have an Olympus Stylus 770 SW (shockproof, waterproof) which is a wonderful digital instamatic. We recently got a Canon EOS XSi ("Rebel")...still getting used to it and the digital darkroom. It seems fine. I remain to be convinced.

My photos tend towards content and feeling. Some of my older photos lack the supersharpness that the new DSLR camera provides, but I like them still. They convey the people and places well.

I have recently obtained a Nikon Coolscan 5000 negative scanner and hopefully can repost better versions of these initial photos (which are, admittedly, a bit crude).

Some of the images in the "fotos for food" series were in color (Kodacolor and Kodachrome) and others in black and white (mostly tri-x, some Ilford). I posted them all initially in black and white to have a more uniform appearance and because I think it suits the overall tone of the series better. When I do have a color version available, I will post it in the Workshop.

Thanks again for visiting, say "hi" if you get a moment!
