Intro: Observations about the website..

This website has been really helpful for me. In the months since I joined I have improved my skills by seeing all of your photos and by taking the critiques seriously on my photos. All of us are learning so the process has been fun and informative.

For those just new to the website there are a few things that may be helpful.

1. Sizing photos…The limit on the photos is 200kb with the maximum dimension of 800 pixels. In reality the dimension limit is strict and your photo will be bounced back if it exceeds 800 pixels. The 200kb seems to be less strict and if you start at 256kb and try to upload you will find that the picture usually is uploaded without difficulty. This will give you the size that all the rest of us are using. If the picture is bounced back, diminish the size by 5% and try again. When you compress your photo, use jpg 10 with baseline optimized..this should save some memory.

2. Overall composition…In the beginning it isn’t bad to use the rule of 1/3rds. If you divide the page into three sections horizontally and vertically and put your horizon and subject somewhere close to the lines, you will be in good shape. Later on it is creative to move from this standard format for different effects.

3. Horizons..make them straight unless you deliberately want to change it for artistic purposes.

4. Shadows…If you have really dark areas in your photos that you want to get rid of, use the fill light in Photoshop CS3 (if you have it) to lighten these areas. Another way to do this is to create a second layer and use a layer mask. Lighten the background layer and paint over the areas you want to lighten.

5. The most important…..get the book “The digital Photography Book” by Scott Kelby. This is easy to read and will improve your techniques in a few days.

Good luck.
