In theory, a portrait is most powerful when the leading eye of the subject is placed at the intersection of these dividing diagonals; of course, rules can (and should) be broken and many of my portraits don't match these dimensions.
But many of the most striking portraits do, and when composing or cropping a picture it can be a guideline to consider.
