I am extremely thankful for your critique as it helps me in improving my skill. Yes, I know that f5.6 gives a good DOF and at 400 MM but holiding that tele lens in hand is just not possible and I did the whole event of two days by hand held, no tripod or monopod as you can't use there. The action is so fast and you have to stand in the mid to snatch the best shot and you have to move with the shot to be away from the horse way...
I would be doing some work in PS to get the look as you want.
