Thanx Jack, I used the french word 'barrage' for the collapsed construction I was refering to; the Englsish word is weir or dam, used to store water for hydro-electrical power generation and/or irrigation. The "vanne" is the giant tube with a valve (you see that valve bisecting the end of the tube in the pic) which is located at the bottom of the dam, allowing the water to pass through it if needed.
