I'm going to defend the pose for one reason: Ringu.

If you've seen any of those Japanese horrors you'll know the strange mix of evil and vulnerability their characters tend to convey - that's essentially what I was trying to capture here.

However from a strictly portrait or asesthetic point of view I agree a different pose would have worked well.
