I understand your hesitation, fish-eye is not for all purposes but can be used in different fields of photography to get interesting effect with it, e.g. portrait or even landscape! Yes, it can be boring if you use it all the time... so it's not like a 18-50mm optic for all purposes!! :)
For the skate shots I use this lens because you can get close to the trick and the action can be the dominant part on your photo! Sometimes I use my tele lens, but the result is not the same! So if you like to put nice effects on your pix I can recommend fish-eye! I use the 10.5mm Nikkor which gives a really nice distortion and also use Sigma 15mm fish-eye which is not for D cameras but can be work well on D cameras as a wide angle lens and the price is pretty fair! :)
