Hi, Peter,
Thank you for the compliments. I don't have much experience with various kinds of cameras, neither film nor digital, so I can't second your opinion about the colours and the sky.
Having the original picture (of higher resolution), I think the light actually reflects from 2 neighboring windows. I don't remember the exact speed and apperture, but I think I tried to make the exposure longer than I normally would, and that may be the thing that caused that effect of the reflecting light. To tell you that I've planned it so? No, I didn't (I wanted the water to become smoother and reflect more light), so, yes, you can call that luck.
I don't scan the pictures myself. I have the film (the negative) scanned at the photo shop after its development, but I try to remember to ask them to refrain from making any changes. I think the tools I have at home are better than the tools they have there, so I prefer to make the required thanges myself. It's not that I avoid making changes (see the "unless otherwise stated" part in my intro). Of course, if a good picture requires some work in order for me to be able to post it in this site, I do make those required changes. What I meant was that I will always write in the notes section about the changes I've made.
I can understand how having to work on almost all of your pictures makes you just go on with that out of inertia, far beyond what you'd be satisfied with with pictures that generally come out alright.
About the workshop:
Of course I approve it. I didn't notice that the water wasn't level, because it ends in different distances, but I think you were right in that aspect. About the sharpness - I also didn't notice the need, but it does have an effect on the picture. About cropping - I know that classic image composition requires splitting the image to thirds. Because the water came out quite well reflecting the light from the window, the ship and the cloud, I didn't want to crop it, but maybe you're right after all.
Thank you for your critique and for your work and sorry for the long reply.
Yaron.
