Thanks Dennis, i liked the dark in this myself, it's very contrasty because of the bright mid-afternoon sun and deep shade, I think it adds to the atmosphere so carried on down that path.
I've been playing around with the toning effects you talked about on the last image, I never knew they existed, anyway i've found it very useful and some of my future posts should be using that method!
