Thanks for the thoughts .. Funny how we get stuck on things .. I got too attached to that stupid rock in the upper left to crop it out .. but I bet you are right .. that would have worked.
I had a bunch of issues with this and the range of light .. I had a devil of a time not losing the whites too much .. and boosting the shadows to where I wanted them without losing an acceptable level of contrast.
