It is still pretty hit and miss to me ..
Here are my tips after one year of trying ..
A circular polarizer will cut the light down enough to do this in dim light .. sunrise .. sunset .. thick clouds ..
other than that a Neutral Density filter is a must .. I have an 8 stop and it is almost too much .. it is so dark I can often not see through the viewfinder ... I have dropped it twice putting it on after a shot was set .. sometimes it causes me to take even longer exposures than I would like .. then again sometimes it is great.
Obviously a tripod .. but the big improvement for me was using the timer on the camera .. I am too cheap to have a remote .. but my shutter clicking was blurring things ..
surrounding grass and stuff blowing in the wind is a nightmare for me .. I know people who are patient enough to layer a couple exposures .. a fast one for the surrounding grass with the slow water .. I have done that exactly once .. and a couple times have spent some time cloning out the offenders ..
My biggest issue now is exposure .. if I get the water right I have a really hard time not overexposing the rest .. I think much of this has to do with time of day being right for the place .. but we will see ..
the extent of my efforts are in my waterfalls and rivers themes on TE .. I have posted all my struggles there .. who knows if there is any wisdom in them ...
