Please do steal the idea! I found that I had to shoot from a tripod because I didn't want to involve the flash. The good thing about that is that if your lens or camera doesn't allow a really shallow DOF, you can always shoot two photos, one just out of focus and then merge them in PS. I don't know what your panasonic is like for DOF, but that might help if you can't go shallow enough.
