You might find this website (http://dpfwiw.com/ir.htm) useful. There is a section about IR photography for a non-modified digital camera called "Can your camera handle IR?"

Some regular digital cameras can. Although the exposure time is long and a tripod is requried,it's still fun to do it.

If you have a film SLR camera, you can use Kodak HIE film with a Hoya 72 infrared filter. The result is equally fascinating.
