The photo was taken in the middle of the day with broken cloud overhead. I always shoot in raw, so I follow the philosophy of exposing as brightly as possible without blowing the highlights. In theory, this gives a bit more information to play with in post-processing.
The original shot has very little contrast so the spray of the waves didn't stand out at all. I use UFRaw to convert my raw files to jpg and tiff and it has two separate curves tools; luminosity curve, and base curve. The base curve adjusts the brightness values of the image before gamma correction (makes the image look the way we see light), luminosity curve is used to correct the brightness values after conversion. I used the base curve to darken the midtones of the image, then used the luminosity curve to adjust the blackpoint and brighten the highlights. |
