Hi John, thanks again for the comments.

The lens used was the 70-200 f2.8, not my new 17-55 f2.8. The image filled the screen at 70mm so I managed a burst of 22 shots to get the one good one :)
The Sigma 70-200 is a very capable lens, very sharp, very fast; perfect for action shots.
I was toying with the idea of going prime 300mm but decided to stick with the zoom for versatility. I did buy a second body though (another D80) which my 17-55 will be attached to for pit walks and close range shots, the 70-200 will remain on the D300 for the action.

IF: Internal Focus, lens does not protrude from the barrel whilst focusing.
