Perhaps someday I might be able to try this at sunset, as you suggested. Currently, my chintzy tripod is totally inadequate for such efforts. I also haven't figured out how to add the size and weight of a good tripod to my hiking habits, since I have an old neck injury that limits my options for carrying camera gear. So, not sure about the chances, but your idea is definitely something to aim for.
