You make a good point about ND filters. I think both are useful. When I was a North Lake I had my full bag of equipment plu of course a tripod. Last week end in San Francisco I was just carrying the camera. I wanted to get a highly contrasting view of the Prudential building - heavy shade on the lower street and bright sun on the building. So I shot a burst of five bracketted shots, hand held. and pulled them together in CS3's HDR setting. If I had my full kit I could have used the Graduated ND filters. I think the ability to do both just makes us better prepared to get an image.
