Reading your note made me realize something:
I didn't only use my SND filter when it was bright and sunny, but I also used it when taking pics in very dark weather.
I reversed the filter, so that the grey part is in the lower half of the picture. I used a longer shutterspeed and wider aperture to make sure I had enough light.
This caused the dark parts in the foreground (specially the dark lava ground) to be in less contrast with the sky. This made it possible to have more details!
;-) you can see that I sure played around with the filters!
