Hi Rew...thanks for the critique....light is interesting..usually I go for even light and even skin tones...but I am starting to think about the harsher tones and how they accentuate features. In this case the light brings out the prominence of his nose and the shadows accentuate the deep set eyes giving him a more interesting character than if all was even....
The other reality for me is that these are all candid shots of people who I have never met so it is easier to position them where they are instead of trying to move them in the shade....The shot yesterday with the older couple was done after I moved them to the shade. In that case I thought the softness of their expressions and features was the key to the photograph.
When I did pencil portraits years ago I got a little too into the technique and didn't let the characters of the people come through..now I am willing to trade some technical features for the best feeling from the person.
