Hi Trudy,
The area used to split up into the shires like Roxburgh Selkirk and Peeblesshire but they have taken that identity away and now the whole are is the Scottish Borders. We border England and although the maps don't show it as a separate country from Scotland we are and always will be as is Wales. The border has changed over the centuries at one time it went down to below Northumberland and Cumbria. The area is vast but the population is very sparse as is all of the South of Scotland and is an area of exceptionally beauty. As Billy Connelly says the Borders is what most visitors think the Highlands look like and should not be missed when visiting these shores.
Thanks for the nice comments and I am sorry for me going on a bit.
Regards
