There must be different ways of viewing this picture, indeed. A realistic way - in which case the picture is too dark and Michael's workshop offers an excellent alternative. Or a poetic way - giving more space to the imagination of the viewer.
For this - subdued - photo, I think the poetic way of viewing is more appropriate, but I fully accept the realistic approach.
Said this, I agree with you that the bright sky somehow contradicts the mood of the picture. Your suggestions about gradients are sound, though I would prefer the black gradient ;o).
