Thank you for your feedback - I really value your constructive suggestion. Until you pointed it out, I did not see the unnatural tones in the shirt caused by trying to reduce the contrast in the shadows. It also caused some unnatural tones in the trees.
I've now selectively applied the effect and lessened the contrast in the sky. If you'd like to take a look, I've uploaded it here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/danbachmann/3667270757/
