I should have gotten down on his level. There were a couple reasons I didn't. The most prominent being that there was no room. We were on a playground and he was not more than 2 feet away from me. Had I crouched, I would have had to use a smaller focal length and that would have made him look rather funny, with a huge nose!
Secondly, the tunnel he was in would have given me fits had I gotten down. You can see how dark it is in there right now. If I were shooting straight into it, the other end of the tunnel would have been completely blown out and quite distracting. In addition, there were smaller portholes along the sides of the tunnel, one of which I hid behind his head. Those would have the same effect as the exit. I've added a shot as a workshop to demonstrate this.
All in all, though, you are absolutely correct. This would have been a more powerful portrait had I been able to get down onto his level. |
