Hi Ralph,
I've only just started using gradients. This is the first time I've used it to darken a sky and it worked pretty well. Basically, in Photoshop create a new layer, and then select your gradient tool. Choose the colour gradient you want - i.e. white to black, yellow to orange, etc. Draw your gradient and then muck around with blending modes and opacity.
