Thanks Michel for dropping in,
the trees are common cottonwood. the sphere is a photoshop creation that started with a closeup of root details sticking out of the washed out river bank. Playing around with it I can't remember all the steps taken, but directional light and lensflare were some of the finishing touches after flipping and mirroring, then spherizing.
