 Maltese boats (52) cldphoto
(213) | On our first fill day in Malta, we spent most of our time on the northern island of Gozo, touring around the walled fortress in the town of Victoria (Rabatt) and driving around the coast. I could have spent a week on Gozo alone, but we were only there for three days total, so we only scratched the surface. The time got nearer and nearer to sunset, and I had no desire to navigate Gozo's tiny roads in the dark, so we returned to the ferry.
As we waited in line and watched the ferry boat pull into the harbor, I looked down at the water and saw several Maltese fishing boats, or luzzu, which I'd been itching to photograph since we started to plan the trip. I dashed out of the car (promising my wife that I would come back before the line started to move), scrambled down near the water, and shot away.
The traditional luzzu is a remnant of the Phoenecians, who populated the islands before the Roman empire took control. The luzzu is high-bowed, traditionally painted in bright colors, and feature either painted or carved eyes in the bow. It is a symbol of Malta and is featured on its currency, the Maltese lira.
Not many changes made to this shot other than cropping out a small float made from a soccer ball. |
