This large, gentle red ape is one of our closest relatives, sharing 97% of the same DNA as humans. Indigenous peoples of Indonesia and Malaysia call this ape "Orang Hutan" literally translating into English as "People of the Forest.

There are two separate species of orangutan - the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) and the Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus).

An orangutan's lifespan is about 35-40 years in the wild, and sometimes into the 50's in captivity. This is one of the lucky one's, at least it is alive and not living in a land where its habitat is being destroyed by loggers. Whatever your views on Zoo's there is a lot of conservation work being done in the good ones.

Hi Chris, I did a workshop on this to make the ape stand out a little better. I cropped, saturated and replaced colours and sharpened the ape slightly. I also added an opaque frame for fun! Hope you like it.
