Coast II - Mahinapua (44)
rewshearer
(20979)
A couple of hours' drive from
Lake Pearson
and a winding drive across the South Island's main divide (turn left at Kumara junction) and you will arrive at Lake Mahinapua.
Typical of the Westland lakes but special to me I guess because my father grew up here, swimming in these waters as a kid in the '30s and '40s. The Coast is in my blood and I love its rugged wildness.
Unsure how to compose lake shots, as always any feedback is much appreciated.
PP - separated foreground from background to adjust levels and saturation (darkened foreground, lightened background.) Some crop, sharpening.

Hi Rew, this WS just to make the sky not being too dull
1. Duplicate orignal photo (always)
2. Choose gaussian blur and make the photo blur but you still able to see the shapes
3. Change the blend mode - this is the 1st clue - in this case I change to multiply
4. Make a layer mask - this is the 2nd clue - paint with brush (black foreground) the area you want to bring back the original details and colors.
5. Flatten layers and save.

As I said these are really minor changes!
1. Darkened and contrasted the sky to balance the pic on the top.
2. Dawn mentioned the "not sharp" background trees! It think it's good to keep it a bit blurred to feel the distance.
3. just reduced the saturation of the green grass! For me it was too vivid!
I hope you still like it this way! :)

... to the lakeside, from the main road. A shingle road crammed with the native rainforest ("bush") that is so prevalent on the Coast.
