Here is my first attempt at selections and backgrounds in PS. Let met know what you think of this.
I took a book and made a selection channel and changed that into a mask selection for the layer. The selection was made partly automatic and partly by hand (fine tuning). Let me know how you would do this in PS.

Cropped, changed the background colour, added a border and then ran through Neat Image. Hope you like it - just another variation.
