Rest In Peace (2)

My grandfather will be cremated today back in the Netherlands. Working in Indonesia for an international humanitarian organization, I won't manage to go there.

With the Grace of God, my employer gave me a day off to go to the church over here and burn some candles. Some sarcasm in that sentence, since humanitarian organisations are often the most humanitarian towards their beneficiaries. The 'humanitarian' part was very difficult to find yesterday, when I was asked to file for official leave in order to go to a church here. But I think that has more to do with the social finesse of people involved than with the organization as a whole.

I managed to find a Catholic church here in Medan, where the predominant religion is the muslim faith. I even found someone who could open that church and it gave me some moments with myself and my thoughts about my grandfather. 88 years old is a very nice age, but it does not make the pain of the loss any less.

Strange thing is that here they do not seem to burn candles in church, were we do so in the Netherlands. For that reason, I did the candle-part at home. I think that burning candles has to do with bringing the person to the light. Honestly, as a child I liked it because you could play with matches and fire. And now I like it because it relaxes just to sit and stare at the candles, slowly dozing away. Alone with my thoughts.

An outside shot of the church can be seen here.

All three pictures on TE and TL, original and workshops, are all about the same subject but distinctively different and as such unique pictures.

I'm not sure what the idea is behind the candles. But it's nicely relaxing to just sit here and watch them burn, getting smaller and smaller slowly.

I'm not big on going to church. I'm one of those people who go with Christmas and perhaps sometimes with Easter. But at moments like these, you appreciate there is something like a church.
