Follow up to my previous post: This picture of my son was taken while I recovered my breath climbing up the Bears Hump in Waterton Lakes National Park.
At that point, he was quite eager to carry on, but I was not yet ready. Barely could keep the camera from shaking.
I was shooting against the sun coming in at an angle behind him, so the sky was a little washed out. I used gradient to add a little color, then levels and curves, downsized.

Blend if sliders

The original, a gradient was used to add color to the sky & darken it. This darkened the trees. I used LAB color and made an adj layer with curves, in which I lightened the trees. I made a gradient to blend in with the original gradient. By using the blend if sliders. I set the blend if to the 'b' channel and adjusted the left underlying layer sliders to 105 & 122. On another adj layer I inverted of the previous grad maske. The lightness channel, I moved the curve endpoits to an input/output of 100/94. In the 'a' channel, I set the endpoints to 97/127. The 'b' channel, I set endpoints to -46/-128. I used the blend if sliders, & set the blend if to lightness and adjusted the left underlying layer sliders to 186/195. I used the black brush tool to paint out those areas that were still too blue. I added one more adj layer as an overall correction. I set the 'a' endpoints to -119/-128 & 119/127. The 'b' endpoints: -119/-128 & 105/127.
