Taken at the Dallas Zoo. I was disheartened when we arrived. I had heard that that zoo wasn't quite up to modern standards, but was somewhat taken aback by the age of the zoo and its design. Most modern zoos keep their animals in enclosures that seem to have elements of their natural habitat. Even if this isn't quite complete, it still can provide a level of engagement no on display here. This particular zoo just had animals in cages. I tried to illustrate that with this shot of a cheetah behind a chain-link fence. There actually were two in this enclosure; this one, which never stepped of the rock on which it was sitting, and another, which seemed to have suffered major trauma to an eye.

I must tell you that I am not necessarily anti-zoo. I think that they provide amazing services for injured or endangered animals and they are an invaluable educational tool for the local citizens. I just think that this zoo, as well as many others around the country, need to continue their ongoing efforts to upgrade, redesign, and provide all the resources necessary to ensure the health and safety of their animals.
