okay, this is the other end of the corridor in the horse barn from "a clean, well-lighted place."

Natural light; mid-afternoon; probably auto-mode

All I did was crop on the right to get rid of a person walking near the stairs; resized for TL in several steps (had to go down to 500 pixels width -- I'm probably doing something wrong there); and saved to web. I didn't adjust any levels or add USM.

What's a good technique for dimming the brightness of the big light patches on the floor? Thanks for any and all comments. This made an interesting b&w print.

I didn't change anything in your photo except reducing the brightness a little and increasing the contrast. I didn't exagerate much though, I just wanted to show you that a little contrast sometimes can be interesting in photos such as yours where there is such a great play between lights and shadows.
