 Kite Surfing (12) sugah_bear69
(4362) | Kite Surfing or Kite Boarding or Fly Surf, is a fast growing new sport, which is gaining lots of publicity - because it is so extreme. It is not wind surfing. It is not kite flying. It is the fusion of these two disciplines with other influences to create the wildest new water sport for years. Chances are you have wanted to find out what all the buzz is about regarding the latest in extreme sports “kite surfing”. This sport has taken over the water recreation areas of some popular beaches so that people can learn the hybrid sport of both kiting and surfing. Kitesurfing, also known as kiteboarding, involves using a power kite to pull a rider through the water on a small surfboard or a kiteboard (which is like a wakeboard).
Kitesurfing is one of many forms of kite propulsion, which include kite landboarding, snowkiting, kite buggying, kite skateboarding, kite jumping, and using kites to propel sea kayaks. A kite can even propel a large ship.
A kitesurfer or kiteboarder uses a board with foot-straps or bindings, combined with the power of a large controllable kite to propel himself and the board across the water. The sport is still in its infancy, but is rapidly growing in popularity. In 2006, the number of kitesurfers has been estimated at around 150,000 to 200,000
The sport is becoming safer due to innovations in kite design, safety release systems, and instruction. Many riding styles have evolved to suit different types of riders and conditions, such as wake style, wave riding, freestyle, jumping, and cruising.
This Kite Surfer is enjoying his sport on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. There were several out there this day, but only one was in the water. I have included in the workshop a photo of one kite surfer closing his kite.
Thanks for stopping by & have a great day of photo hunting,
Fran
