Grand Vaulted Ceiling at Union Station (2)
Swissguy Silver Note Writer [C: 0 W: 0 N: 22] (95)
Many attempts have been made to capture the impressive apparent continuity of the ceiling above Union Station in downtown Washington DC... The 800 pixel restrictions of the Trek-sites would not really allow a panorama shot to be used with sufficient sharpness. But somehow I have managed to allow more room for the texture of the surface to mesmerize, by tilting the camera to focus more on the ceiling than the floor and shops below.

Hope you like it. It's an effect not too dissimilar to the blue sky I let fill most of the picture in this shot also taken on the same visit to DC, at the Metro escalator coming up to Arlington National Cemetery.

Union Station has such a special atmosphere: as well as being a crossroads for travelers of all sorts - short stretch commuters and long distance trekkers en route to far off lands - it does not retain that graininess or even grubbiness that many railway stations have, especially when you think about those older ones in Europe and Asia....

A tripod would have come in handy, but this was, as all my shots are, an amateur effort. One shot. One ceiling!

Just some minor correction of vertical lines using Gimp.
