(6344) | | An old house is being ripped apart. The people have come out of the intact courtyard to see todays progress on the demolition of one part of it. Newari homes were built around family courtyards, that were then built around bigger public courtyards, filled with temples or religious shrines. One member of this ancient world heritage group of homes decided to tear down history, to have a "modern" concrete apartment house. (I suspect people get grants to fix the 14th century houses, then use it to destroy them.) It is illegal, but the last King did not care, and 2000 world heritage homes were destroyed in 2 years alone, according to the local Kathmandu newspaper. The last King of Nepal wanted a $30 fine for each one destroyed. The Maoists hate culture, and were accused of stealing the artifacts to sell for guns. Whatever the truth, Kathmandu, Patan and even Bhatupur are losing their ancient charm and history openly, at an alarming rate. |
