Venice is an amazing place. An island city where the main thoroughfares are canals. It is completely free of cars, it is a pedestrian paradise, a place of 400 bridges and 2000 narrow streets and alleys. There is so much to see here, the canals, churches, palaces, bridges and shops. This must be one of the most visited places in the world. This is also a place to drive photographers mad, as everywhere you look, behind every single corner, you are faced with incredible photo opportunities.

The Venetian Republic was a major maritime power during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and a staging area for the Crusades, as well as a very important center of commerce (especially silk, grain and spice trade) and art in the 13th century up to the end of the 17th century.

Unfortunately this place is living on borrowed time. As the whole city is built on very unstable soft muddy soil, the entire city is slowly sinking into the lagoon. The experts think that unless some real drastic action is taken, this magnificent place, know as the “Queen of the Adriatic” will be gone in 50 to 100 years time.

The picture was taken in a narrow alley off the main square in Venice.
