From the Air (48)

Yesterday I got the most surprising phone call on my day off -- a friend asked if I'd like to go flying !! He got his pilot's licence last winter and needed to put in air time to keep the licence current.
Without a moment's hesitation I said Yes!!!" and within half an hour I was at Buttonville Airport :)

I have a few pictures, but not too many that I would consider postable. Shooting through the acrylic windshield of a plane presents all kinds of problems. And since most of our tour was a flight over the city of Toronto, the additional problem of low-level smog makes many shots a bit murky.

To overcome one of the problems of shooting through the acrylic, I set my focus on manual and then infinite (which meant remembering to refocus every time I zoomed in or out:( -- not always possible when you're excited).

What you see here are the Scarborough Bluffs and Bluffer's Park. Peter banked the plane so I could get a better view :). The bluffs are an escarpment that once formed the shoreline of the prehistoric Lake Iroquois. As you can see in the water, the bluffs are eroding rapidly, so much so that houses built along the edge have slipped and fallen into the lake. Bluffer's park, created with landfill not only forms a park and mooring for sailboats, it helps to slow down erosion caused by the lake undercutting the cliffs. Unfortunately nothing can be done by the increased erosion caused by an increased population above. Houses and roads above increase the amount of water flowing over the bluffs and cause great chunks to disappear from time to time.

Tech: Captured in raw and adjusted levels, contrast & saturation in raw with PhotoShop CS2, converted to jpg, cropped to remove some of the interior of the plane, increased contrast to overcome the effect of the acrylic window, resized, sharpened, framed and signed

Thanks for looking and for all your critiques, workshops and suggestions. Have a healthy, happy, and safe weekend.
