Thanks for the reminder :)
Please not that my changes would work much better on the original image, but this might give you the general idea.

In Photoshop CS2, I selected the dodge tool, set it at 0% hardness (i.e. as soft as possible) and set the size as wide as the narrower portion of the band of trees. Then I set it to dodge midtones only, since the highlights are fine and
the shadow setting is usually very heavy-handed. I brushed across the whole band once, and then did some areas a second time, fading the effect by 50% each time.
I hope you like the result for e res.
While I had the image open, I also selected the sky and clouds using the "magic wand" and holding down the shift key to add more bits. then I increased the contrast for that portion by about 30% to give the sky a little more punch

I hope this gives you a few more ideas and tools :)
