The road from Arequipa to Cusco ascends to 4500 m an d the temperature drops accordingly. Herds of alpaca, vicuna, and llama graze on the treeless steppe of the altiplano. Indian women in this region knit caps, scarves, belts, sweaters...you name it, they knit it. The finest wool is vicuna, and you don't find much of it except in fancy shops. The next softest wool is alpaca, which is used to make 95% of the caps and scarves shown here. Llama is the coarsest (hence cheapest) and generally reserved for ponchos and sweaters. I bought several alpaca "ear-flap" caps for
the equivalent of US $2 a piece. In New York or Paris, they sell for upwards of $30. Somebody's taking advantage of the Indians!

I cropped the photo so that the OE sky was not visable and the hats became more the real subject. I did not remove the noise but did add a little sharpness. I then added a border on the top and bottom to give even more focus on the subjects.
