Opened image and made a duplicate layer. Used Curves tool to lighten the bottom layer to the point where there was detail in the shadows. Switched to top layer and used a soft 35% opacity erase brush on selected areas, face, top of hat and some of the darkest areas of hair, to allow lighter bottom layer to show through.
