Bridge on the River Kwai (36) chrisJ
(41355) | The Bridge on the River Kwai is an infamous world war 2 location. Over 100,000 Asian labourers & about 16,000 allied soldiers died here under the Japanese imperial army, including British, Dutch & Australian troops. The Japanese armys' idea was to push through a railroad to Rangoon (Yangon) for the assault on Myanmar & India. (Both were then British colonies). The first 2 'curved' spans (not visible here), are part of the original bridge, built in 1942. The box girder, or rectangular spans in the distance, were added much later, after the war, to replace bombed out sections of the bridge. (British war planes repeatedly bombed the bridge during the war). |
