This is a good shot to talk about Channels, Black and White conversions and Adjustment layers and Brushes.

In this shot the light was not good…too much back light and the background had too much sun coming through…despite this the pose was good and details came out acceptable.

The color shot was adjusted in the main menu of CS4…multiple duplicate layers were made to play with.

The first layer was chosen and Channels were selected individually. Monochrome was selected and the Red Channel seemed pretty good for the background tone. Using the Channel Mixer the Red Channel was highlighted and the layer was adjusted and flattened and labeled Background.

The next color layer was selected and converted to Black and White using the Channel Mixer highlighting the Blue channel which seemed to work with the helmet and glasses..the layers were flattened and labeled Helmet and Glasses…..

Using a layer mask these first layers were combined using the background then a mask letting through the helmet and glasses.

The same procedure was used for the skin tones which were mainly the Red channel with some Green mixed in and the Blue reduced to almost zero.

The layer with the background, helmet and glasses had a layer mask which allowed the skin tones to be brought through….

So in the end the Channels were used in three different ways for three different parts of the pictures all put together with masks and adjustment layers…all of this is NOT THAT COMPLICATED. Don’t be afraid to experiment…There is a workshop to show the original color, over exposed image.

The color image in the workshop shows a few things...the balance is off, there is too much backlight and there is no real difference in tone between the helmet, glasses, shirt and rider's face. By converting to black and white and combining layers with different mixtures of channels, a separation could be made between the facial tones and the rest of the shot.

This is the first shot posted using the 35mm F1.4. This lens is as sharp as the 85 F1.2.
