I took some pictures of trees and exposed roots during an outing in the Oldman River Valley in Lethbridge and I played with it in photoshop. I used 2 pictures. The first one rotated, flipped and merged, the second one was a close up of exposed roots which were cranked through a bunch of filters, sized, sphered and then cloned in. I also used lens-flares in the process.

this is the second picture I used for the center piece. It was a close-up of exposed roots, filtered through polar coordinates, some areas were then restored with the history brush. The result was then spherized, spotlight added and a small lensflare added in the center.
